ARTS+MINDS IS A THREE YEAR ARTS AND REGENERATION PROJECT SUPPORTING TAI CALONS £14M ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMME CALLED YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD, YOUR CHOICE.

The arts programme focusses on a number of neighbourhoods across Blaenau Gwent’s three prominent valleys, including: Hilltop and Newtown in Ebbw Vale, Cefn Golau and St. George’s Court in Tredegar, and Waunheulog in Nantyglo.

The Environmental Improvement Programme offers a complex range of urban and semi rural settings for artists to add inventive, substantial and thought-provoking ideas and works to give added and inspirational value to the mainstream regeneration process. Artists have been invited to propose a range of physical and transitory outputs, including: small — or large scale — incidental graphic works; additions to the elemental aspects of landscape works, such as fencing, surface detail, material use and planting; temporary installations; and — where the arguments are substantiated — stand alone artworks that are location-sensitive and grounded in the social and cultural fabric of individual communities.

The current roster of artists that Arts+Minds has engaged within targeted neighbourhoods include: Glenn Davidson, Heather Parnell & David Mackie and Eleanor Davis & Deborah Jones, Cardiff; Andy O’Rourke, Newport; Michael Disley, Hepworth in Yorkshire; and Matt White, Bristol.

In addition, Arts+Minds recently commissioned the French photographer, Clementine Schneidermann as photographer-in-residence to create a new body of photographic work within Blaenau Gwent, which we believe has added a new layer of 'magical-realism' picture-making to an area, synonymous with a history of images of heavy industry and post-industrial decline.
