A Commission from Arts+MindsFinding Maindee and from the Station to the Sea.

Space Invaders is a partnership between three South Wales-based projects that are part of the Arts Council of Wales’ Ideas: People: Places (IPP) portfolio.

In a refreshingly radical way, IPP has allowed artistic practice to challenge a conventional sense of architecture and design to influence the way that community space is planned and managed. These projects all promote the non-prescriptive open-minded approach that artists take to shaping how we sense and use the built environment. For example, our projects have been influential in determining how a historically significant Swansea street is re-imagined; how people are the assets that make a Tredegar housing estate; and how real local culture is embedded in the fabric of a Newport library.

Arts+Minds (Blaenau Gwent), Finding Maindee (Newport) and From the Station to the Sea (Swansea) have come together to create an opportunity for an artist to make a piece of work that engages with some of the ideas and themes common to our three projects and their operation and delivery as part of IPP. We’re interested in an artist’s lateral thinking and perspective on what our projects are trying to do and the means we’re using to do it.

We are particularly interested in the commission exploring the stuff of multi-sectoral partnership working and the different language, organisational cultures, definitions, approaches, infrastructures, etc., that this involves. Above all, we’re interested in how such things as the ‘success’, ‘value’ and ‘impact’ of this work are understood and communicated in a way that doesn’t rely on conventional methods of evaluation.

We are exceptionally open about the detail and workings of this commission and look forward to the resulting artwork surprising us. Of the few things we do know, one is that we want it to result in a piece of work that can be experienced and disseminated online. It may additionally have a ‘live’ element (e.g. as part of a presentation or event), but it is important to us that its online manifestation is part of its conception.

Comisiwn gan Arts+Minds, Ffeindio'r Maendy ac O’r Orsaf i’r Môr

Partneriaeth yw Space Invaders rhwng tri phroject yn ne Cymru sy’n rhan o borfffolio Creu Cymunedau Cyfoes (CCC) Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru

Mewn ffordd iachusol o radical, mae CCC wedi caniatáu i arfer artistig herio pensaernïaeth a dylunio confensiynol er mwyn dylanwadu ar y ffordd y caiff gofod cymunedol ei gynllunio a'i reoli. Mae’r projectau hyn oll yn cefnogi dylanwad meddwl-agored ac annhraddodiadol artistiaid ar sut y byddwn yn synhwyro ac yn defnyddio’r amgylchedd adeiliedig. Er enghraifft, dylanwadodd ein projectau ar sut yr ail-ddychmygwyd stryd o bwys hanesyddol yn Abertawe; ar sut y gwelir pobl fel yr asedion sy’n gwneud stad tai yn Nhredegar; a sut mae diwylliant lleol go iawn yn rhan annatod o wead llyfrgell yng Nghasnewydd.

Daeth Arts+Minds (Blaenau Gwent), Ffeindio'r Maendy (Casnewydd) ac O’r Orsaf i’r Môr (Abertawe) ynghyd i greu cyfle i artist i wneud darn o waith a fydd yn ymgysylltu â rhai’r o’r syniadau a’r themâu sy’n gyffredin i’n tri phroject, eu gweithrediad a’u llwyddiant fel rhan o CCC. Rydym yn ymddiddori yn syniadau newydd ac anarferol artistiaid a’u persbectif ar yr hyn mae ein projectau’n ceisio’i wneud a’r dulliau maent yn eu defnyddio i wneud hynny.

Rydym yn neilltiol o eiddgar i’r comisiwn archwilio sylwedd gweithio trwy bartneriaethau aml-sector, a’r gwahanol ieithwedd, diwylliannau sefydliadol, diffiniadau, ffyrdd o fynd ati, isadeileddau ac ati y mae’n hynny’n ei olygu. Yn bennaf oll, mae gennym ddiddordeb yn sut y caiff pethau fel ‘llwyddiant’, ‘gwerth’ ac ‘effaith’ y gwaith hwn ei ddeall a’i gyfleu mewn ffordd nad yw’n dibynnu ar ddulliau confensiynol o werthuso.

Rydym yn eithriadol o feddwl-agored ynghylch manylion a gweithrediad y comisiwn hwn ac edrychwn ymlaen at gael ein synnu gan y gwaith celf terfynol. Un o’r ychydig bethau a wyddom yw ein bod am iddo arwain at ddarn o waith y gellir ei weld a’i ledaenu ar-lein. Gall fod ag elfen ‘fyw’ hefyd (e.e. fel rhan o gyflwyniad neu ddigwyddiad) ond mae’n bwysig i ni bod ei amlygiad ar-lein yn rhan o’r cysyniad gwreiddiol.

Gair am yr artist

Gallech fod yn wneuthurydd ffilmiau, ffotograffydd, darlunydd, dylunydd graffig, animeiddydd, awdur, bardd, neu rai neu ddim o’r pethau hyn.

Gallech fod yn gweithio yng Nghymru ond efallai na fyddwch.

Byddwch yn gallu teithio.

Gallech fod yn gweithio ar eich pen eich hun neu gydag eraill.

Bydd gennych brofiad o weithio’n ‘wleidyddol’ gyda phobl a llefydd.

Gallai eich arfer fod yn cael ei ddisgrifio fel gwaith sy’n ‘ymgysylltu’n gymdeithasol’, ond efallai na fydd.
