The Cefn Golau housing estate is located to the west of Tredegar town centre on the hillside overlooking the town. It was build during the mid 1950’s and at the time was considered to be an exemplar of modern design, mostly semi-detached homes with generous gardens, landscaped open spaces and tree-lined avenues in the garden suburb style. Since then however, Cefn Golau's fortunes have declined and significant areas of housing have been cleared. The estate has a small local shopping parade and a community house run by a local community group.

Mae ystâd dai Cefn Golau wedi'i lleoli i'r gorllewin o ganol tref Tredegar ar ochr y bryn sy'n edrych dros y dref. Fe'i hadeiladwyd yng nghanol y 1950au ac, ar y pryd, roedd yn cael ei hystyried yn enghraifft batrymol o waith dylunio modern, gyda thai pâr â gerddi mawr yn bennaf, mannau agored wedi'u tirlunio a rhodfeydd coediog yn unol ag arddull gardd-faestref. Fodd bynnag, mae Cefn Golau wedi dirywio ers hynny ac mae ardaloedd sylweddol o dai wedi cael eu clirio. Mae gan yr ystâd res fach o siopau lleol a thŷ cymunedol a redir gan grŵp cymunedol lleol.

Hilltop, Ebbw Vale

....

Hilltop, named after Hilltop Farm and sitting in the foothills of Cefn Manmoel and the Sirhowy Valley Walk, is a residential area located in an elevated position to the west of Ebbw Vale town centre. The neighbourhood forms part of a large area of traditional former ‘council housing’, with many of the homes now owned by Tai Calon. These include two storey semi-detached homes, flats, rows of terraces and sheltered accommodation. The Hilltop Shops, a prominent feature and focal point in the estate, are also owned by Tai Calon and located on the corner of Darby Crescent and Tredegar Road. The appearance of the shops, particularly poor quality shop fronts and pedestrian environment, are the focus of a major improvement programme to begin the process of improving the Hilltop area. The shopping area is distinctive in the sense that it functions jointly as living accommodation and commercial destination. It also sits in a very prominent location at the foot of the hilltop estate and, by its nature, is a gateway to the expansive estate behind.

..

Ardal breswyl yw Hilltop, a enwyd ar ôl Fferm Hilltop ac sydd wedi'i lleoli ar droedfryniau Cefn Manmoel a Llwybr Cerdded Cwm Sirhowy i'r gorllewin o ganol tref Glynebwy. Mae'r gymdogaeth yn rhan o ardal fawr o ‘dai cyngor’ traddodiadol gynt, a Tai Calon sydd bellach yn berchen ar lawer o'r cartrefi. Ymhlith y rhain mae tai pâr deulawr, fflatiau, rhesi o dai teras a thai lloches. Tai Calon sydd hefyd yn berchen ar Siopau Hilltop, sef un o nodweddion amlwg a chanolog yr ystâd, a leolir ar gornel Cilgant Darby a Heol Tredegar. Mae ymddangosiad y siopau, yn enwedig blaenau siopau o ansawdd gwael a mannau o ansawdd gwael i gerddwyr, yn destun rhaglen wella sylweddol er mwyn dechrau'r broses o wella ardal Hilltop. Mae'r ardal siopa yn nodedig yn yr ystyr ei bod yn gweithredu fel llety byw ac ardal fasnachol ar y cyd. Mae hefyd wedi'i lleoli mewn man amlwg iawn yng ngwaelod yr ystâd ac, yn naturiol, mae'n gweithredu fel mynedfa i'r ystâd eang y tu ôl iddi.

NEWTOWN, Glynebwy

Newtown, Ebbw Vale

....

Newtown is a post war housing estate built in the mid 1960’s-70’s positioned on the eastern slopes of Ebbw Vale and directly facing the Hilltop development, across the valley on its western flank. The estate is a modern mix of terraced housing and blocks of low rise flats that have been arranged around large open spaces and parking areas, broadly segregating vehicles/parking and pedestrians. Due to the steepness of the ground the estate is laid out as several plateaus with connecting roads, steps and pathways between each level. Located at the centre of the estate is the recently built Newtown Community Centre, run by local volunteers — two of whom are octogenarians — adjacent to a large area of open space, soon to be developed, where a block of flats once stood.

..

Ystâd o dai a adeiladwyd yng nghanol y 1960au a'r 1970au yw Newtown, ac mae wedi'i lleoli ar lethrau dwyreiniol Glynebwy yn union gyferbyn â datblygiad Hilltop, ar draws y cwm ar ei ochr orllewinol. Mae'r ystâd yn gyfuniad modern o dai teras a blociau isel o fflatiau sydd wedi'u trefnu o amgylch mannau agored mawr a mannau parcio, gan wahanu cerbydau/mannau parcio a cherddwyr yn fras. Am fod y tir yn serth, adeiladwyd yr ystâd ar ffurf sawl darn o dir gwastad, gyda ffyrdd, rhesi o risiau a llwybrau yn cysylltu pob lefel. Yng nghanol yr ystâd mae Canolfan Gymunedol Newtown, a adeiladwyd yn ddiweddar ac a redir gan wirfoddolwyr lleol - sy'n cynnwys dau berson yn eu hwythdegau - ger man agored mawr, a gaiff ei ddatblygu cyn bo hir, lle safai bloc o fflatiau gynt.

St. George's Court

....

St Georges Court is located to the north of Tredegar town centre and shares a northern and eastern boundary with the busy A4048 carriageway. The estate is a former Council development with the majority of the properties owned by Tai Calon, following stock transfer. The area is characterised by 12 flat blocks of 3 and 4-storey sheltered accommodation with some under croft parking areas for residents. The buildings are positioned within substantial grounds of open space, although topography varies within the grounds, and accordingly a raised concrete concourse has been constructed linking different buildings. St. George’s Court, the only Arts+Minds site situated close to a town centre, has a very different urban dynamic to the characteristics of the outlying estates. The Tredegar complex is also distinct in that the series of low-rise flats have been designed within a self-contained, well-defined and volume-rich site, whose elevated walkways and passages loosely echo the architectural principles of Corbusier.

..

Mae St George's Court wedi ei leoli i'r gogledd o ganol tref Tredegar ac mae'n ffinio â ffordd brysur yr A4048 i'r gogledd a'r dwyrain. Hen ddatblygiad gan y Cyngor yw'r ystâd, gyda Tai Calon yn berchen ar y rhan fwyaf o'r eiddo, yn dilyn trosglwyddo stoc. Mae'r ardal yn cynnwys 12 bloc o fflatiau lloches trillawr a phedwarllawr gyda mannau parcio dan do i breswylwyr. Mae'r adeiladau wedi'u lleoli ar ddarnau mawr o dir agored, ond mae'r dirwedd yn amrywio o fewn yr ardal, felly mae cyntedd concrid uchel wedi cael ei adeiladu er mwyn cysylltu gwahanol adeiladau. Mae gan St George's Court, sef yr unig safle Arts+Minds sydd wedi'i leoli'n agos i ganol tref, ddynameg drefol sy'n wahanol iawn i nodweddion yr ystadau pellennig. Mae cyfadeilad Tredegar hefyd yn nodedig yn yr ystyr ei fod yn cynnwys llawer o fflatiau ar safle hunangynhwysol sydd wedi'i ddiffinio'n dda, ac mae'r rhodfeydd a'r tramwyfeydd uchel yn cyd-fynd yn fras ag egwyddorion pensaernïol Corbusier.

Waunheulog, Nantyglo

....

Waunheulog (Winchestown) is located to the south west of Brynmawr, off Waun Ebbw Road and Pond Road, and sits on the northern most flank of Mynydd Carn-y-cefn and at the base of extensive disused coal tips from the Nantygo workings of yesteryear. The estate is a former Council development and is mostly owned by Tai Calon following stock transfer. There is a mixed tenure with some privately owned property including 2-storey terrace homes and maisonettes. The estate stands on its own, surrounded in the main by open land and countryside. The neighbourhood is designed as blocks of modern terraced housing with many unmarked gardens at the front and with rear vehicular access. Whilst the properties are compact, the estate is low density with large areas of open space laid out formally breaking up the estate into three distinct blocks. The estate is contained within two perpendicular roads running northeast and southwest, which effectively separate the estate from surrounding neighbourhoods. While open green space is at a premium, aside from one row of houses facing due north which looks out onto a parallel row of mature trees – that transforms the sense of space and the quality of the estate’s atmosphere in a marked way – there is almost no other vegetation to punctuate a rather monotonous and empty landscape.

..

Mae Waunheulog (Winchestown) wedi'i leoli i'r de-orllewin o Frynmawr, oddi ar Heol Glynebwy a Heol y Pwll ac ar ochr fwyaf gorllewinol Mynydd Carn-y-cefn, ar waelod hen domenni glo mawr segur gweithfeydd Nant-y-glo gynt. Hen ddatblygiad gan y Cyngor yw'r ystâd, a Tai Calon sy'n berchen ar y rhan fwyaf ohono yn dilyn trosglwyddo stoc. Ceir deiliadaeth gymysg gyda rhywfaint o eiddo preifat, gan gynnwys tai teras deulawr a maisonettes. Mae'r ystâd yn sefyll ar ei phen ei hun, wedi'i hamgylchynu gan dir agored a chefn gwlad yn bennaf. Dyluniwyd y gymdogaeth fel blociau o dai teras modern gyda llawer o erddi heb eu nodi yn y blaen a mynediad i gerbydau yn y cefn. Er bod yr eiddo'n gywasgedig, dwysedd isel sydd i'r ystâd, gyda mannau agored mawr sy'n ei rhannu'n dri bloc ar wahân. Mae'r ystâd wedi'i lleoli rhwng dwy ffordd berpendicwlar i'w gilydd i'r gogledd-ddwyrain a'r de-orllewin sydd, i bob pwrpas, yn cadw'r ystâd ar wahân i'r cymdogaethau cyfagos. Prin yw'r mannau gwyrdd agored, ac ar wahân i un rhes o dai sy'n wynebu rhes baralel o goed aeddfed i'r gogledd – sy'n gweddnewid yr ymdeimlad o le ac ansawdd amgylchedd yr ystâd mewn ffordd amlwg – nid oes unrhyw lystyfiant arall, bron, i dorri ar draws tirwedd sydd braidd yn undonog a gwag.
